Before its panel yesterday, it was reported that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D next season will be its last.

To recap, Season 6 takes place a year after Coulson’s death, while S.H.I.E.L.D is rebuilding under Mack’s leadership. The agents are investing paranormal energies and find themselves encountering a new enemy known as “Shrike,” parasites that infect worlds and destroy them. In the latest episode that aired, May seemingly killed Sarge, the Director Coulson lookalike, the agents had teamed up with to try and defeat the Shrike.

So with Season 6 almost done, and Season 7 to be the last, what does that mean for the show?

Well, not much was revealed at the SDCC panel Thursday afternoon. While Marvel did drop an extended trailer for the end of Season 6 ( see below) the majority of the panel was retrospective showing highlights from each season, and asking cast members about their favorite parts, per Twitter user @FailWhale34’s tweet:

Highlights included  the first FitzSimmons kiss, Ghost Rider’s appearance, the goodbye to Hope and a few others.  The panel got emotional very quickly, as each cast member recalled a moment from the show that really impacted them.

Jed Whedon, the show’s co-creator and co-show runner revealed that the cast and crew are filming the last episode right now, adding to the emotional atmosphere of the panel.

@MoTancharoen told us they just did the final table read ever and in the first page of their script was their original call sheets from S1E1 and she got emotional. It made me emotional hearing about it #HallH#AgentsofSHIELD #SDCC2019 #sdcc19 @AgentsofSHIELD

Jed Whedon, the show’s co-creator and co-show runner revealed that the cast and crew are filming the last episode right now, adding to the emotional atmosphere of the panel. It was at the end of the panel and after a lightning quick Q&A session, where Whedon mentioned that a comic book exploring Daisy and Simmons’ adventures in space might be happening, that Marvel dropped released an extended trailer for the end of Season 6:

I don’t get it: does this mean they’re finishing shooting the last season just as it’s been announced, and almost a year before broadcast? Obviously there’s editing and postprod, but does it take that long?

They got a go-ahead to film both season six and seven at the same time, and did so back-to-back. So even though season 6 has not finished airing, all of season 7, with the exception of the final episode, has already been filmed.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought when they announced Seasons 6 and 7, that they confirmed 7 would be the final season? I had at least always assumed that was the case.

As I recall it, while many people assumed season 7 would be the last as soon as it was announced, that was not confirmed by Marvel until the announcement at SDCC.
